Unicorn Ula is real!; or, Art Class Draculaura Appreciation

You may remember a few days ago that I referred to Art Class Draculaura as Unicorn Ula. It was a joke meant to emphasize that this particular Ula is indeed something special. Unfortunately, the pics in that earlier post didn't come anywhere near capturing her true beauty. I'm big enough to admit when I've made a mistake, and by posting less than flattering shots of AC Ula, I was mistaken indeed. It's time I set that right and do good by her! Let's get started...

Bold yellow eyeliner and shadow? Check! Shimmering taupe topper shadow? Check! Random bright red divider line? Check! My heart stolen by all this? Check!

Ula's shoes have some wonderful molding: grids, studs, skullettes, swirling platform soles, and even paint brush accents. Unfortunately too few of these beautiful details are actually painted.

I'm sure you guys already know this but just to be safe I'll point out that Ula's scarf isn't part of this doll's outfit. I just threw it in there because I think it really works with the rest of the look.

Speaking of, Ula wears a retro, lemonade-striped top with sleeves that end at her elbows in pink netting. A large pink bow adorns the swoop collar. The top attaches to a black bell skirt featuring a lemonade paint splatter print. It ends in yellow netting, a nice contrast to the netting of her sleeves.

She also wears a yellow headband featuring two small bows on each side, a subtle kawaii nod. Her earrings are solid pink skullettes.

Around her waist is a pink apron with black grid print. It ties in back with simple black ribbon.

Judging by the 2014 dolls, including this particular Ula, the 50's will be to 2014 what the 60's were to 2013. Picture this outfit in Operetta's colors and you'll see what I mean.

I don't know what I love more: that bold, lively faceup, or those bold, lively streaks in her hair. Draculaura has yellow streaks y'all! And not just any yellow -- we're talking loud, bold, electric yellow. LOVE IT.

Yep, we've got the 50's on our hands, folks! Grab a Coke float and your old lady, we're going to the sock hop! Or at least it looks like Ula is! Also, it appears she'll be taking occasional breaks from doing the twist to paint some portraits.

Hopefully I'll get to scan and post Ula and the other AC dolls' booklets soon. They're very clever in how they each tell one part of a larger story. Plus they have some beautiful artwork inside. There's even some minimal, but very fun, character development.

Like I said: Unicorn Ula. Magical and perfect.

She also comes with a heart-shaped palette and paint brush. And yes, if placed correctly, she can hold these items on her own! She also comes with her framed self portrait, but I'm kinda ditzy and forgot to get a pic of it. It's pretty nice, coming in a frame with stand, and done in a humorous Picasso style.

Art Class Draculaura, aka Unicorn Ula. (Yes, from now on that's what I'll be calling her. It's fun! Care to join me in this zany endeavor?)

Til next time!

  1. What scarf is that? Always reading your posts and want to say something but I'm shy and that's all I can manage!

    1. Believe it or not, I'm actually very shy too, Helena. But never worry about sounding foolish or asking dumb questions here at Voicething -- those don't exist. I like you and your comments are always welcome!

This scarf is from Diener Draculaura. I just really liked it with the Art Class outfit, thought it was a nice match.

    2. Yeah, I figured that but I already posted the question haha. You just have so many new dolls! Luckily I was able to get some dolls over thanksgiving. Ashlynn and Hunter who I have wanted so badly! Like you said in one of your posts, Hunter is the only attractive male doll! I don't like any of the MH boys...which reminds me I picked up a Heath and Abbey two pack because I figured it was rare to see them in store (I haven't found one so far) but his arm was broken off! It was in his sleeve so I didn't notice but that's the first time this has happened to me! I could tell it was a returned item because there wasn't any tape...I couldn't return it because he was the last thing I started to unbox when I found out....I have another set on its way to walmart though...I also got swim class Rochelle her hair is so perfect! I could ramble on about what dolls I got and what dolls I want but that seems self centered of me...maybe I will say small things on your posts for now on...for this one, I love how you call her unicorn ula because I love unicorns! I love the yellow for a change from just black and pink. I don't like her small eyes at all though. Do you know when they started getting smaller? I have only three Draculauras: signature, scarily ever after, and swim class. Only swim class ula has the small eyes

    3. First: congrats on your new dolls! Especially Ashlynn and Hunter -- what a fab set, am i right? ;) Also, yep, Hunter puts ALL the MH male dolls to shame!
Second: Contact Mattel immediately about your Heath doll. Unless Walmart is replacing it for you instead. (Sounds like they are?)
Third: Swim Rochelle is a gorgeous doll -- this year's best Rochelle imo. Totally agreed about her hair, imo it's her best feature. I wouldn't mind seeing more Rochelle's with that same hair. Expect to see her on my Top 10 (coming soon!). Swim Rochelle... *swoon*

With Ula's eyes, it varies from doll to doll. Her recent I love Shoes doll had the usual "big" eyes, but AC and several others have the small eyes. I have a feeling it depends on whether the doll was manufactured in Indonesia or not, but I'm not certain. Just speculation on my part. I too prefer the big eyes on Ula, but when a design is good enough (as is the case with AC aka Unicorn Ula), I can overlook it. Congrats on your signature Draculaura btw. She has by far the biggest eyes of any Ula dolls, alongside a couple other very early dolls like GB. Signature Ula is a real beauty!

    4. Well I was thinking of contacting Mattel but decided against it...if it was my own money yeah I would have called them....I know I'm so bad....but if something like that ever happens again I'll be sure to contact them. I cant wait to see your top 10 list! I can overlook the eyes too but they still look strange to me. If I see any around I'll check where she is manufactured to see if there are differences! Signature Draculaura was the easiest to get of the signatures (I got into MH too late and missed them), since she was rereleased with the rerelease of the School's out line (I think). That's how I got both her and signature Spectra. Thank goodness for the original favorites line, now I can get signature Clawdeen and Frankie! I hope they do more...1st basic Lagoona is amazing! I would also want Dawn of the Dance but I don't think that will be rereleased...

    5. Oh I totally forgot! I have Dot Dead Gorgeous Ula as well! Must have forgot her because she isn't that great haha. I also have her newspaper club fashion pack and her scaris fashion pack, as well as the gifts from all the sweet 1600 dolls (I only own S1600 Clawdeen, I ordered most of the accessories loose) I really want Sweet 1600 Frankie and Draculaura though!

    6. I've had a few dealings with Mattel customer service for replacement dolls and it's always gone extremely well. But others have said they had trouble. i think it all depends on who you get when you call. But definitely keep it in mind for the future! :)

I'm pretty lucky in that I caught MH fairly early and was able to get the original basics (well, except Clawdeen -- sadface). Unfortunately my basic Frankie's skin has faded so I'm hoping to pick up the re-release soon. I would kill for a DOTD re-release, or at least a wave 2 re-release!

    7. To this day i still say DDG Ula is the worst MH doll to date. So boring and uninspired, she even feels cheaply manufactured. Yuck. I love both her School Club and Scaris FP's. I actually have my Scaris Ula wearing her Scaris FP, and my GNO Venus in Ula's Scaris outfit, paired with DOTD Frankie's pink fishnets. They both look great imo :)

    8. Sounds super cute! Well, I got into MH when I started to like traditional girly things again. I went through a goth/emo/anti girly stuff phase in junior high and the beginning of high school, and once I finally got over that disaster...actually, I started getting into "girly" things when I saw Tangled in theatres. It was an absolute amazing experience and is my fave movie of all time. When I saw Beauty and the Beast redone in theatres that was it, I was hooked on Disney princesses, plus My Little Pony was (and still is) pretty popular and its cute (although "bronies" have scared me awayfrom the franchise, I know they arent all bad but still), and I started to like Disney Fairies etc...but something was missing. I remembered back to when I was young and I used to have lots of dolls, mostly bratz and barbie, but sadly I gave them all away. I wanted a doll, just one, like I needed one, so I went to walmart and looked at the dolls, bratz didnt look that great...then I saw the MH dolls. Ive known about it, but I never really saw any dolls in person. I thought they were amazing, I think only the classroom dolls were being sold, and Frankie was the cutest so I got her. I told myself one doll, but now they are part of my life. Not only do I like MH dolls I like other dolls, esp expensive ones (Disney exclusives, Tonner, Pullips, etc) but I can't afford those so I focus on MH. Haha I just told my life story...how did you get into MH? Or just dolls in general? Was it through Blythe? Or before that? Sorry for so many questions!

  2. Unicorn Ula sounds appropriate to me, because she is very attractive. I think this is the prettiest Draculaura Mattel has made (just my opinion). Great post, as usual.

    1. Welcome to Voicething, RagingMoon! Thanks for stopping by and commenting! Although I don't consider her the very best, she's *way* up there! I can certainly see why you'd consider her the best. Glad you like the blog! :D

  3. This doll is perfection! This is one of the few Draculaura dolls where I love the hair, hairstyle, make up and outfit! And I´m not just talking love, I´m talking Love Love! And you can count me in with the Unicorn Ula nickname! It´s fitting for her in that she is a rare Draculaura that has everything right :)
And that 50's theme, I'm so happy about that! I don't recall her ever having a 50's theme before, but she has had many other styles resembling a certain period, now she can add this to her list and it makes sense with her being a very old ghoul too. When I can add her to my collection, she's gonna be fanging out at the die-ner when she's not painting!
Just one question. Does she include a stand?

    1. Hehe thanks for joining the cause! Unicorn Ula will live on in infamy! ;) I agree, she's such a perfect doll, and throwing in that 50's outfit -- all the better, even more so because it was totally unexpected. I LOVE when Mattel surprises us like this!

The Art Class dolls actually have a really elaborate setup, Mighoula. Not only does she include a stand and brush, she also has that painting I mentioned (and it's fairly big, too), plus a beautiful booklet with lots of drawings and a mini-story. All in all I'm *beyond* impressed with this line!

    2. I wish Spectra and Operetta were part of the Art Class line. Oh well, at least Oppy is part of the FCA: Black Carpet line. Poor Spectra has only Ghoul Spirit. (Thankfully, she has those bold black streaks in her hair). But still.... *points an angry fist at Mattel gods*

    3. Bunch of new rumors!!!
MH has filed for a new trademark:
      Lorna McNessie...

Plus, it's not confirmed yet but it seems we're getting a DDG Wave 2 and the first doll released in that line will be Venus in an uplifted version of her DDG appearance in the webisode "Night Of A Thousand Dots". The other ghould rumored for this line are Frankie, Cleo, Clawdeen and Robecca.

Also, a new ILF wave, and Venus would also be the first ghoul of that new wave. Exciting, eh?

Plus, this version of Draculaura looks pretty nice. Great photoshoot. It's about time they got more daring and bolder with her. Now, if only they could do the same with other ghouls like Spectra, Rochelle, Operetta, Ghoulia and Jinafire. Even Catty and Catrine.

    4. Honestly, I think getting Oppy is the BC line instead of AC is better in the long run. If she were in the AC line we would've gotten some cool extras, but I doubt her design would have been nearly as cool as her BC design. Spectra, however, yeah I totally would've loved her in AC. :(

As for the new rumors, Lorna sounds great -- I'm on board! As for Venus, I heard that the DDG outfit is actually for her ILF doll. So, I guess we'll see? Either way, I'm eager for it/them.

Glad you like the pics, Tristan. I think they've done will with Jina so far, but the lack of Ghoulia lately really is heartbreaking. I wish they'd bring back FP's, preferably deluxe ones, and specifically for Rochelle and Spectra.

    5. That's good to know! I'm very happy she's a deluxe doll instead of a budget release!

    6. Yeah, I was really surprised at just how in-depth they went with this line. I'm also loving all the lines getting various booklets. It used to just be signature dolls. But now GNO, AC, and more have booklets too -- it's super cool!

  4. The 60s stuff from this past year was okay. A bit on the hippie side for my taste. But if we are really moving into the 50s, we are going to have a problem. I will run of of money and places to put the girls.

I saw Ula yesterday at TRU, and put her back in order to pick up AC Robecca. I am getting ready to make a Steampunk workshop, and I needed a Robecca with clothes on (the only Robecca I have is in her Dance Class wear, and not really good for working in a workshop). Now that I have seen your review, I have to go back. Good thing the MH dolls are buy one, get one 50% off for the next week. ;-)

    1. Hi Logan! :) I don't know, I feel like they took the 60's into more of a Mod/couture direction than hippie. I love the 60's so I totally dug it, tbh. :) Agreed about the 50's, btw. Love those vintage looks, and with MH more often than not they integrate it so well into the monster's themes.

Congrats on your Robecca -- and yeah, it's totally cool they're running that sale. Perfect time to get your Unicorn Ula, Logan! ;)
